Camp Tiger Benefit Auction Gives Family Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

The best Father’s Day gift ever didn’t disappoint. Last Saturday, Charlie Settoon got to do something few people get to do thanks to his five children and the LSU Health New Orleans Camp Tiger Benefit Auction. The 1959 LSU grad, along with three of his kids, were part of the LSU Tiger Band’s thrilling pre-game ritual, but this time from inside the barricades. Christine Settoon, MD, (LSU Health New Orleans Medicine ’17) was right by his side. The 2014 Camp Tiger Auction Chair raised her paddle with the winning bid on “A March Down the Hill with the Golden Band from Tigerland” during the Camp Tiger Benefit live auction last March. Her dad, a season ticket holder for 59 years, has entered Death Valley countless times, but never before like that.

“It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our family,” says Dr. Settoon, who is now an LSU Health Otolaryngology House Officer I.

Although the Victory Hill tradition at LSU didn’t begin until the early 1990s, it has been a beloved and powerful custom ever since. The first four notes of the pre-game performance send shivers down the spines and swelling pride to the hearts of every LSU alum and fan. It is one of the best college football game-day traditions.

The Walk Down the Hill was just the beginning of a magical afternoon for the Settoons. And it ended just the way it should have – with an LSU Tigers’ upset victory over Auburn and some wonderful memories.
